Cooling and irritation are forms of chemical sensation, sometimes called chemesthesis, involving sensory nerves such as the trigeminal system. Ingredients such as menthol activate cold-sensing receptors, including TRPM8. Nicotine involves different receptor systems, including nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and, for irritation, TRPA1.
A cool draw can be part of a nicotine-free sensory ritual. It is not the same as nicotine’s pharmacological effects, and this mechanism does not establish craving relief, smoking cessation or reduced harm.
